Cast

The presentation of Shikataganai (It Can't Be Helped) at the 2011 presentation at the Hawai'i International Conference on Arts and Humanities has been sponsored by Smith College.  The actors were primarily sourced from the undergraduate student body.  Casting represents a collective American experience and the diversity of the Smith College Department of Theatre.

Emily Brown (Una Kagawa) is an actor-singer-dancer with a passion for storytelling and performance. Originally from Sonoma County, California, Emily will graduate with a BA in Theatre from Smith College in the Spring of 2011. Prior to receiving her undergraduate degree, Emily completed a number of theatre and music training programs, including the California State Summer School for the Arts as a Vocal Major, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Summer Seminar for Juniors, and the British American Dramatic Academy in London, UK. She has performed in multiple productions with the Summer Repertory Theatre and Sonoma County Repertory Theater. This year, Emily will be involved in the creation and performance of an original work based on the lives such artists as Frida Kahlo, Virginia Woolf and Marilyn Monroe, exploring the artist's identity, her relationship to her art, and the intersecting pathways of artistic and personal passions. Favorite roles include: Maria in "West Side Story", Nancy Blake in "The Women", Sabine in "The Three Musketeers", Isabella in "Measure for Measure" and, of course, Una in "Shikataganai (It Can't Be Helped)"! Emily's next project will be portraying the role of Mrs. North in "Some Mother's Son", a new play by Smith MFA Playwright Darren Harned, directed by Kendra Arimoto, at Smith College in 2011. Alicia Cho (Kei Matsumoto) is a skilled singer and actress with extensive experience in musical theatre, opera, and straight plays. Raised in East Brunswick, New Jersey, Alicia will graduate as a Theatre Major and pre-med student from Smith College in the Spring of 2011. She has been trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) for the Spring 2010 Classical Acting Program. Past experiences include Dido in Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas,” Nora in Vaughan Williams’ “Riders to the Sea,” Ophelia and the Priest in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” and Mistress Trickwell in Mary Pix’s “The Beau Defeated.” She has also been involved with the technical aspects of the New Century Theatre Internship during the Summer of 2010. Recently, she has been involved with the Smith College production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” in which she played the roles of Witch #2, Donalbain, and Seyton. Her upcoming role is Kathy in the Amherst College J-term musical production of Sondheim’s “Company.” When she is not performing on stage, she loves traveling and exploring other cultures. Besides studying abroad in London, she has studied abroad in Ewha University for the Summer of 2008; she has also performed with the American Music Abroad Choir in Europe (Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, and Austria) in the Summer of 2006. Lacey Perrine Chu (Narrator) was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii.  At 18, she moved to London to study fashion; however a summer Shakespeare program at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art convinced her to pursue her passion for classical acting, and she recently graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.  Since then, she's moved back to Honolulu, and has been participating in as much local theatre as possible. 

Hana Kadoyama (Sir Pablo) is thrilled to be a part of Shikataganai! A Yonsei hapa native of the San Francisco Bay Area, she is honored to be working on such an important and personal piece. Hana has stage managed in theatres around the Bay Area as well as at Smith College and is loving this chance to work onstage instead of behind the scenes. She will graduate from Smith in May with a BA in Theatre and Sociology and is headed for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival with a production fellowship post-graduation. 


Eve Marie Mugar (Hamlet) is a senior at Smith College where she majors in Theatre with a concentration in Acting. She also studies Music with a concentration in Piano, and has recently been exploring her interest in composition. As a Junior she spent a year at the British American Dramatic Academy in London where she studied acting intensively with some of the best drama teachers in England. She has acted in numerous productions over the past 14 years and has enjoyed playing such roles as Yente in "Fiddler on the Roof", Reno Sweeney in "Anything Goes", Alice Sycamore in "You Can't Take It With You", and a variety of roles in original plays. In 2008 Eve was the recipient of New Hampshire's Spotlight on the Arts award for "Best Supporting Actress In a Play". Dann Seki (Katsumi Nakamura) is a stage and screen actor and storyteller. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He has appeared in numerous plays on the stages of most of the theatres in Honolulu. His TV and film credits include many productions filmed in Hawaii including “Hawaii Five-0”, “Lychee Thieves”, “The Informant”, “Max’s Special Delivery”, “Lost”, “Hawaii”, “North Shore”, “Baywatch Hawaii”, “Magnum, P.I.”, “Crowfoot”, “And the Sea Will Tell”, “Savage Beach”, and numerous local commercials. Developing as a storyteller since 1994, he has performed at various venues on Oahu and the Neighbor Islands. A graduate of Aiea High School, Dann has degrees in Audiology and Health Services Administration from the University of Hawaii. He is retired from his position as an Audiologist at Pearl Harbor (1979-2005) and from the Army Reserve (1979-2006) after spending 8 years on active duty with the Army. He was also on the air at KUMU-FM for 15 years.


Futoshi Terashita (Peter Kagawa) was born and raised in Japan.  He was the first in his family to come to the United States at age 18.  He received a BA in Theatre with a Performance Emphasis at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana and an MFA Theatre (Asian Performance) from University of Hawai'i at Manoa in Honolulu.  Futoshi has an extensive film and theatre resume.  He has performed for Kennedy Theatre, Kumu Kahua Theatre, Earl Ernsl Lab, Venutre Theatre and Billings Studio Theatre.  He first caught the attention of director/playwright Kendra Arimoto in the english-language premiere of The Judith of Shimoda as "Kito." Special skills include a Black Belt in Taekwondo.  



Anne Yukie Watanabe (Tetsu Nakamura) is a junior history major at Smith College and started acting in theatre this year as Tetsu in Shikataganai. As a Yonsei Japanese-Canadian and Nisei Japanese-American, Anne's paternal family was incarcerated at the Lilouet and Tashme camps in Canada, while her maternal side of the family lived in Tokyo during World War II. Anne hopes to continue exploring acting and theatre, particularly with projects that contain themes of historical, social justice or multiracial significance.
